"I picked up this book because of the mermaids in the title, but it isn't actually about mermaids. This book deals beautifully with the complex relationships between three generations of mothers and daughters in one family. This isn't usually the type of book I like (I have enough matrilineal complications of my own to deal with), but I did enjoy this. "
